What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation involving your child’s teeth or mouth that requires immediate attention from a dentist. These situations often involve severe pain, bleeding, or trauma that could lead to lasting damage if not addressed quickly. Knowing when to seek urgent care can help protect your child’s oral health.
It is important to distinguish between a true emergency and a minor issue. If your child has severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, a knocked-out tooth, or significant swelling, it is likely a dental emergency. For less urgent concerns, such as a small chip without pain, you can typically schedule a regular appointment.
Common Dental Emergencies We Address
At Peachtree Kids Dental, we are prepared to handle a variety of urgent dental situations for children. Our team focuses on relieving your child’s discomfort and addressing the problem effectively. Some common dental emergencies we see include:
Severe Toothaches
Persistent and intense pain can indicate an infection or other serious issue.
Chipped or Broken Teeth
Depending on the severity, this can expose nerves or cause sharp edges that cut the mouth.
Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Teeth
This requires immediate action to potentially save the tooth, especially for permanent teeth.

What to Do Before Your Appointment
Taking immediate steps can help manage your child’s comfort and improve the outcome of a dental emergency. Here are some general guidelines to follow until you can bring your child to our office:
For a Knocked-Out Tooth
Gently pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing part), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly with water (do not scrub). Try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place it in a cup of milk or your child’s saliva and bring it with you immediately.
For a Severe Toothache
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water to clean it. Gently use dental floss to remove any food particles caught between teeth. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, as this can cause tissue damage. You may give your child an over-the-counter pain reliever suitable for their age and weight.
For a Chipped or Broken Tooth
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply a piece of gauze to the area for about 10 minutes. A cold compress on the outside of the face can help reduce swelling.
For soft tissue injuries
Rinse your child’s mouth with a mild salt water solution. Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to the bleeding area for 10-15 minutes. A cold compress can help reduce swelling and pain.
