Dental Fillings
At Peachtree Kids Dental, we understand that finding out your child needs a filling can be concerning. Dental fillings are a common and effective way to repair teeth affected by cavities, helping to restore their health and prevent further decay. We focus on making this process as comfortable and reassuring as possible for your little one.
What Are Dental Fillings?
A dental filling is a simple and effective way to fix a tooth that has a cavity. A cavity is a small hole that can form in a tooth if decay starts to break down the enamel. When we place a filling, we gently clean out the decayed part of the tooth. Then, we fill the space with a special material to protect the tooth and make it strong again. This helps stop the cavity from getting bigger and keeps your child’s smile healthy.
Types of Dental Fillings
At Peachtree Kids Dental, we offer different types of filling materials, and we will discuss the best option for your child’s specific needs. Our goal is to choose a material that is durable, safe, and effective for restoring their tooth. The most common type of filling we use for children is composite resin.
Composite Resin (White Fillings)
These fillings are made from a durable, tooth-coloured plastic and glass mixture. They are a popular choice because they can be matched closely to the natural shade of your child’s teeth, making them blend in seamlessly. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth, which can help support the remaining tooth structure.
Amalgam (Silver Fillings)
Amalgam fillings are made from a mixture of metals and have been used safely for many years. They are known for their strength and durability, especially in back teeth where chewing forces are strongest. We can discuss if this option is suitable for your child.
Signs Your Child May Need a Filling
It can sometimes be tricky to tell if your child has a cavity, especially if they are very young. Regular dental check-ups are the best way for us to spot cavities early, often before they cause any discomfort. However, there are a few signs you might notice at home that could suggest your child needs a filling.
Keep an eye out for any complaints of tooth sensitivity, especially to sweet foods or cold drinks. You might also notice a dark spot or a small hole on your child’s tooth. Sometimes, a child might complain of a toothache, which can be a sign that a cavity has become larger. If you notice any of these signs, please let us know.
The Dental Filling Procedure
We understand that visiting the dentist can sometimes feel a little overwhelming for children, so we take extra steps to make the filling procedure calm and easy.
First, our team will make sure your child feels comfortable and understands what will happen in simple terms. We will gently numb the area around the tooth so your child won’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.
Next, we carefully remove the decayed part of the tooth.
Once the tooth is clean, we place the filling material. If it’s a composite filling, we use a special light to harden it quickly.
Finally, we shape and polish the filling so it feels natural and smooth. Your child will be able to go home shortly after, often with a fun sticker!
Your Child’s Comfort and Safety
At Peachtree Kids Dental, your child’s comfort and safety are our highest priorities during every visit, especially when a filling is needed. Our team is specially trained to work with children, using gentle techniques and a reassuring approach to help them feel at ease. We use local anesthesia, often called “numbing medicine,” to ensure the area around the tooth is completely numb before we begin.
We also offer various ways to help your child relax, such as watching a movie or listening to music during their treatment. We take our time, explain each step in a way they can understand, and encourage them to ask questions. Our goal is for your child to have a positive and comfortable experience, building trust for future dental care.
Caring for Your Child’s New Filling
After your child receives a new filling, it’s important to follow some simple care instructions to help it last. We will provide specific advice tailored to your child’s filling and situation. Generally, it’s best to avoid chewing on the treated side until the numbness wears off, which can take a few hours, to prevent accidental biting of the cheek or tongue.
Encourage your child to continue their regular brushing and flossing routine, paying special attention to the area around the new filling. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also key to monitoring the filling and ensuring your child’s overall oral health. If you notice any unusual sensitivity or discomfort that lasts more than a few days, please contact our office.
