Pulp Therapy
Sometimes a cavity goes deeper than it looks.
When that happens, it can reach the inside of the tooth. That’s usually when your child starts noticing it more. Sensitivity. Discomfort. Pain that doesn’t just go away. This is where pulp therapy comes in.
What’s Actually Happening Inside The Tooth
Inside every tooth is a soft centre. That’s where the nerve sits. If decay reaches that point, a regular filling isn’t enough. The affected part needs to be removed so the tooth can settle. The goal is to deal with the problem and keep the rest of the tooth in place.
Why We Try To Save The Tooth
Even though baby teeth don’t last forever, they still matter.
They hold space. They guide how adult teeth come in. They help with eating and speaking.
If one comes out too early, other teeth can shift. That can create spacing issues later. If we can safely keep the tooth, we usually do.
Signs To Watch For
Sometimes it’s clear. Sometimes it isn’t. You might notice your child reacting to hot or cold, avoiding one side when chewing, or pointing to the same spot more than once. Other times, we catch it during a routine visit.
How Treatment Is Done
We keep it steady. The area is numbed so your child isn’t feeling pain. Then we remove the part that’s affected, clean the space, and seal the tooth.
In some cases, the tooth is covered for extra support. We explain things simply as we go so your child isn’t left guessing.
Keeping Your Child Calm
This is usually the biggest concern for parents. The approach matters more than anything. If a child feels rushed, it’s harder. If they feel guided, they settle. We move at a pace they can handle. We pause when needed.
What Happens After
Most kids bounce back quickly. The tooth stays in place and things go back to normal. We check it at future visits to make sure everything is holding up.
