What Is Sleep Dentistry
Sleep dentistry, often called sedation dentistry, uses safe medications to help children relax during their dental appointments. While the name suggests “sleep,” most children remain awake and responsive, just much calmer and more at ease. This approach helps reduce anxiety and makes longer or more complex treatments much more comfortable for your child. Our goal is to create a positive and gentle experience.
Who Can Benefit from Sedation?
Sedation dentistry can be a wonderful option for many children. It’s especially helpful for those who feel anxious or scared about dental visits, have a strong gag reflex, or find it difficult to sit still for long periods. Children needing extensive dental work, or those with special healthcare needs, can also benefit greatly from this gentle approach. Our team will discuss if sedation is the right choice to ensure your child’s comfort and successful treatment.
Types of Sedation We Offer
We offer different types of sedation to suit your child’s individual needs and comfort level.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): This mildest form of sedation is inhaled through a small mask placed over your child’s nose. It helps them feel calm and giggly, and the effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed. Your child will remain fully awake and aware.
Oral Sedation: For children who need a deeper level of relaxation, we can provide a prescribed medication to be taken before their appointment. This helps them feel very drowsy and relaxed, often drifting into a light sleep, though they can still be gently awakened. We will provide specific instructions for this option.
IV Sedation: In some cases, especially for more complex procedures or significant anxiety, IV sedation may be recommended. This method delivers medication directly into the bloodstream for a deeper state of relaxation. A qualified professional monitors your child closely throughout the entire visit.
